Sweat was streaming down my face as I looked perplexedly at Taiwanese scooter drivers passing by wearing long sleeved shirts and light coats. Were they cold, crazy or so used to the heat that they didn't mind?
Come to find out that they are also hot, but a stronger desire is driving their behavior. This is a longing for beauty. Here in Taiwan, white skin is deemed attractive so, the sun is the 'enemy'. Keeping one's skin as fair as possible is the goal. So while many westerners are soaking in the rays, most Taiwanese will be found gathering under the shade of a nearby tree in the hopes of keeping their skin from tanning.
