Why is he staring at me?

Does he think I'm a celebrity? Is he a stalking me? Chances are, both these choices are wrong. Did you know that in Taiwan culture, staring at people isn't considered rude like it is in Western cultures?

People usually stare at foreigners because they are curious. They don't often mean to be rude.  My solution is to turn it into a win-win situation: I smile at them and say "hi" or "你好" (ni3 hao3 /ㄋㄧˇㄏㄠˇ)  This usually surprises them in a good way. About 99% of the people smile back and say "hi" or 你好".  Try it next time. Even if you can't speak Chinese tell them "hi" or given them a friendly nod.  And don't forget to smile.
